Equality Diversity and Inclusion

Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) at Longdean School

Longdean School is a safe place for everyone.  We celebrate diversity, we actively challenge discrimination, and we are committed to being inclusive.

Longdean is a diverse school made up of many races, cultures, religions, abilities, sexualities and socio-economic backgrounds. We want every individual in our school community to have the opportunity to succeed and to reach their full potential. We acknowledge and celebrate our differences and are committed to tackling prejudice through promoting tolerance and understanding.

Everyone in our community is expected to work together to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any discriminatory behaviour should be reported and will be dealt with appropriately.  Every individual will be treated with kindness and respect and given the opportunity to overcome any barriers they may face and we expect all of our stakeholders to share in this view.

We are currently working towards the Equaliteach Silver Level Equalities Award to ensure that equality and diversity are at the forefront of our decision-making and are always a priority for our school community.

Longdean EDI Forum

Longdean Forum

We held our second session in January and gender diversity and British Values were discussed.  British Values were well articulated by the students and they could see where they see them applied in their lessons.  There was lots of discussion about gender diversity and the LGBTQ+ community so we revisited this topic in the third Forum in March where we also talked about misogyny.  As usual, we will send out notes to be followed up with further discussion in form time.

Equaliteach Equalities Award

Evidence has been submitted to show that all of our curriculum design and implementation is inclusive of people of different religions, different ethnicities, different sexual orientations and of people with disabilities.  These indicators have now all been approved and we now have to look at how inclusive we are of different genders including transgender students.

Toxic Masculinity

Graham Cunningham is organising for leaders from Scholars' Education Trust to come in and talk to our girls about challenging misogynistic behaviour from male students.  We are also looking into having outside speakers talk to the whole school about this too.

LEAD

Six members of our LEAD group were invited back to Tanners Wood Primary School to give presentations on Pre-Slavery Africa and the American Civil Rights Movement.  This is the third year they have been invited in to the school and they are always a big success.

Ramadan and Easter

Graham Cunningham invited leaders of the local mosque into school to talk to all year groups about this important event and to explain why our Muslim students will be fasting.  The Headmaster is also giving assemblies this week on why and how we celebrate Easter.

LGBTQ+ assemblies

These took place slightly later than planned and celebrated LGBTQ+ History month (February). Form tutors have been asked to follow this up with some activities and a quiz.

We also announced the launch of the LGBTQ+ group and the first meeting took place last week. We have also given out approximately 40 badges to staff who are happy to be visible in their support of the LGBTQ+ community and to be approached by students who might need a listening ear
