6th Form Curriculum

At Longdean Sixth Form, we want all our students to find a set of relevant and interesting subjects to study, and they can choose from a wide variety of academic and vocational courses, with the option of taking a blend of both.

Academic and vocational options
While A level assessment is linear with some coursework and all exams at the end of Year 13, for vocational courses the assessment is modular. Coursework and exams are spread across Years 12 and 13. Our vocational courses range from Travel & Tourism to Health and Social Care. Our range of A levels is equally diverse, with Modern Foreign Languages, all three Sciences, Humanities and both Art and Design and Product Design among the choices on offer. We review our course selection each year, adapting our options based on student demand and adding new subjects such as Politics and Criminology.

A-level Foundation courses
We are also one of only a few sixth forms to offer A-level Foundation courses. These are designed to equip students who haven’t achieved grades 4 or above in English and/or Maths, and also include Biology, Citizenship Studies and HPQ (Higher Project Qualification, equivalent to a GCSE) which gives students the opportunity to write an extended essay on a subject of their choice This innovative, second-chance Foundation course is a real success; every year more than 50% of students go on to pursue Level 3 qualifications at Longdean, or at another college of their choice.
